Loshusan’s no parrotfish initiative praised online

Jamaicans are praising supermarket giant Loshusan for its recently launched campaign aimed at protecting the environment.
The supermarket announced via social media on June 16 that it would no longer be retailing parrotfish, in an effort to protect the environment and prevent beach erosion.
“Please note that ‪#‎ParrotFish‬ will NOT be sold at,” said the supermarket in a post on Facebook dated June 16.
According to the supermarket, the #NoParrotFish initiative is aimed at protecting the environment.
The supermarket noted that the Parrotfish is an important part of the ecosystem, helping to clean coral reefs, while excreting sand that helps to prevent beach erosion.
By not selling parrotfish the supermarket company hopes to help in the effort to counter beach erosion.
Many Jamaicans who saw the supermarket’s campaign on Facebook, lauded the initiative as an excellent move to raise awareness about environmental issues affecting the island .
“Hats off to you!!....rarely we see such bold move,”said one Facebook commentator.
“That's very good I have never been to the supermarket must visit one day,” added another Facebook user.
Slowing  the rate of erosion on Jamaica’s world-famous beaches has been a matter of  public concern for several years.
In recent years, the topic has been given more attention as the controversial Negril breakwater project began in March 2015  to much backlash from local hoteliers.
