WOMAN PREGNANT WITH TWINS FINDS OUT HER DOWNLOW HUSBAND GAVE HER HIV
You make all the right choices and think that you’re safe. Then, life slaps you in the face with a harsh reality that you will never forget.
Before she went to bed last night Renee Ladybyrd Burgess was deep in thought about her life, her decisions, past relationships and how those choices adversely affected her life.. You see Renee made all the right decisions.. She wasn’t promiscuous, didn’t sleep around and even got married to the love of her life.
However, that decision would ultimately alter her path and pull her into the national spotlight, turning her into an HIV activist..
A broken-hearted Renee now wishes she could turn back the hands of time..
In a shocking Facebook post about her ex-boyfriend’s and what if’s, I was reading along with this post that came down my newsfeed and thinking about my own ex’s and how much they affected my life. But once I got to the end of Renee’s post I realized this was totally a different situation.. My last relationship sucked, but Renee’s last relationship would prove to be immensely detrimental to her health..
Renee wrote:
Her story starts many years ago, the day before Thanksgiving Renee went to the doctor for a prenatal exam and was informed by the Dr. that she tested positive for HIV.. The test came about after Renee went to the Doctor weeks before with complaints of not feeling well..
Before telling Renee her results the Dr. asked her husband to step out of the room..
“I was completely in shock,” Burgess now recalls. “I just stared away at the wall. I can still visualize the color of the paint.”
Renee told her Dr. to call her husband back inside, because if she was HIV positive HE was the one responsible..
AskKissy.com interviewed Renee and asked her about her husband’s response, the day she found out her marriage was built on a lie..
How did the conversation with your husband go when you confronted him?
“We were sitting in front of the ob/gyn when I found out. He acted nonchalant.”
In fact, He gave her the look like “WOW” she found out.. Her husband’s first words to her in the car after the doctor’s appointment were not filled with grief, sadness or regret.. Instead he uttered: “Don’t tell anyone.”
WOW! Did you know immediately that you were leaving him? How long did it take you decide that you were done with the relationship?
“Yes I knew I was leaving it took me a month to finalize my decision to leave.”
Less than 2 months later, Renee left her husband the following January..
At the time Renee says she had no idea that knowingly infecting someone with HIV without exposing your status was a felony crime in Florida, until she watched a television episode about a gay man knowingly transmitting HIV to his partner..
Renee immediately called a detective who told her he needed a confession from her husband in order to charge him..
At the time her husband was in South Carolina, still begging Renee to come back and stay married to him..
On Valentines Day Renee decided to call her husband under the rouse that she needed to go see a psychologist and she needed some questions answered so the Psych doctor could treat her properly..
She got her husband to answer every question the detective told her to ask, including how long he knew he was HIV positive and she even found out that he was not only sleeping with other women, but also men..
Finding out that her husband had possibly infected over 100 men and women gave Renee the strength to stop hiding and the courage to go public with her story..
Renee told askkissy.com, “I never once thought twice about my decision to have him incarcerated for the crime.”
Before I even had him arrested, I forgave him,” Burgess told the Daytona Times.
“I just made sure he knew that I would never forget.”
Her husband plead guilty, was sentenced to the maximum of 5 years and only had to serve 4 and a half years..
Renee now a published author after penning her book “Married, But It Can Happen” has plenty of advice for women.. .
Renee says women should take charge of their health at all times.. Needing further expansion, Askkissy.com asked Renee if that meant she thought married women should use condoms?
“I DON’T THINK THAT MARRIED WOMEN SHOULD USE CONDOMS BUT THEY NEED TO MAKE SURE THEY GET THEIR ANNUAL PAP SMEARS AND INSIST THE DOCTOR ALSO DO AN HIV TEST. THEY DON’T AUTOMATICALLY TEST FOR IT AND MOST WOMEN THINK THEY DO.”DON’T THINK BECAUSE YOU’RE IN A MONOGAMOUS RELATIONSHIP OR THAT YOU MARRIED, THAT IT CAN’T HAPPEN TO YOU.IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU, JUST AS EASILY AS IT HAPPENED TO ME..
Renee now, 32 a single mother of 4 kids, also has aspirations of making a movie about her life.. She’s started a GoFundMe, promising sponsors credit in the movie, but so far only $5 of her $5,000 goal has been raised..
This entire story really touched me.. About two weeks ago I went to the Dr. for my yearly and got tested for everything including HIV.. The results came back negative so I wrote a joking post on Facebook, on how I was going to claim virginic status again.. My, how we may not realize how much of a blessing those negative results are.. Things could be much different.. As Renee’s story could happen to any of us..
My heart goes out to her..
